Q.  What’s the RAREST blood type?
A.  THE ONE THAT IS NOT THERE WHEN YOU NEED IT!

Supporting the Community Blood Supply is an Important Part of the “Corporate Culture” In Brevard County, Florida and along the Space Coast.
Our community in Brevard County, Florida's blood supply is solely dependent on volunteer donors—60% of which donate at workplace blood drives.  Continually expanding FDA donor restrictions are depleting the existing donor base at ever higher percentages.  This means a serious blood supply shortage unless we work together to increase and sustain blood donations.  Improving workplace blood drives is the short-term answer to overcoming this shortfall.  Florida’s Blood Centers needs your help and the help of your employees.  As with all corporate initiatives, the key to success is having top management’s endorsement and involvement. Without those critical elements, on-site blood drives would not be as successful.  If we can help in any way with giving a presentation to managers, as well as employees, please let me know.

“Give to Live” Promotion
We are continuing our “Give to Live” campaign through the end of February, to promote the health benefits of donating blood, as well as our mini-physical.  All blood donors will receive a “Give to Live” T-shirt while supplies last.  As a special thank you, our donors may receive any number of food incentives and coupons (at participating locations).

Cancer patients in daily need of treatment, burn victims who need plasma, trauma victims who need red blood transfusions and routine surgeries – all depend on the gift of a volunteer donor.  Donors can be as young as 16 and should weigh at least 102 pounds.  There is no upper age limit.

Spread the Word About ALYX (pronounced Alex)
The ALYX is exciting technology that can help with our continuing blood shortages.  Through this automated system, a donor can give two units of red cells during one visit.  When giving blood with the ALYX, donors are only giving the red blood cells and not plasma.  The process is perfectly safe.
  • ALYX donors are only eligible to donate every four months instead of every two.
  • Many donors report feeling better after an ALYX donation.  A smaller needle is used and there is fluid replacement which reduces any possible tired or dizzy feelings some donors experience.
  • A typical donation on ALYX takes 20-25 minutes
  • ALYX donors must have a higher level or iron than needed for a typical whole blood donation.
  • Males must be at least 5’1” and weigh at least 130 pounds; females must be at least 5’5” and weigh at least 150 pounds
