   Hurricanes in Brevard County, Florida and throughout the Space Coast over the years have left their path of destruction.As residents and visitors in Brevard, it's important to be prepared. A hurricane watch in Brevard means conditions are possible within 36 hours. This watch should put you on-guard for protective measures. A hurricane warning means sustained winds are at least 74 mph and expected within 24 hours. If the warning has been issued, it's time to complete all ways to protect you and your family and determining the safest location.
First Steps 1st to make sure you are prepared for a hurricane that could reach Brevard County, Florida:
Make sure you have a disaster supply kit. All too often, people procrastinate and don't start building their kits until too late. Don't let this happen to you. The following is a list of items needed in order to be prepared:
Water: Water, water and more water. Calculate at least 18 gallons per person. This takes in consideration 1/2 gallon for drinking and 2 gallons for bathing, Tip Try freezing water ahead of time. You can never have enough ice and it runs out quickly. Food: Ready-to-eat (canned meats, vegetables, & fruits), canned milk, snacks, instant coffee, soft drinks & tea. Keep the basics around such as sugar, salt, pepper, an vitamins. In other words, things you use every day. Supplies and tools: Flashlights, cash, paper plates, plastic utensils, can opener, utility knife, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, pliers, tape tube tent, matches, compass, signal flare, paper, pencil, plastic sheeting, map of evacuation routes, fully-charged cell phone, portable cooler, battery-operated lock, transistor radio preparedness manual. Personal Items: Toilet paper, towels, soap, shampoo, personal products, medicine, rubbing alcohol, sun protection, inset repellent, rain gear, sturdy shoes, blankets, and pillows.  Baby Items: Diapers, formula, powdered mil, jarred baby foods, and medications. Sanitation: Along with personal items, add plastic, garbage bags, plastic bucket, household chlorine bleach and disinfectant.
